Top Five Wins of Bangladesh Cricket

1. Bangladesh vs Pakistan, 1999 World Cup

Bangladesh participated their first-ever World Cup in 1999. They pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament by beating Pakistan in the 29th Match of the competition. After batting first, Bangladesh scored 223 runs on the board with Akram Khan’s 42 runs from 66 balls. He was the top scorer of Bangladesh.

To restrict the star-studded Pakistan batting line-up from reaching the target, Bangladeshi bowlers needed to do something extra ordinary. Khaled Mahmud rose the occasion & picked up three wickets. Pakistan were bundled out for 161 runs & Bangladesh won the game by 62 runs. This was the epic win for team Bangladesh, which was also the biggest win at that time for Bangladesh.

2. Bangladesh vs Australia, 2005 Natwest series

England hosted Australia & Bangladesh for a Tri-Series in 2005. Most of the fans expected it to be a two-way battle as Bangladesh were known to struggle against the top ranked nations. But Bangladesh changed the vibe of the tournament by winning against mighty Australia.

In the second match of the series, Australia batted first & secured 249 runs on the board. It was never going to be an easy task for team Bangladesh against Australia’s pace trio Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie & Michael Kasprowicz. But Mohammad Ashraful played an extraordinary innings (100 runs off 101 balls), well supported by the skipper Bashar (47 runs off 72 balls). Aftab Ahmed ended the game with a bang (21 runs off 13 balls), making a history for Bangladesh cricket.

3. Bangladesh vs India, 2007 ODI World Cup

This was one of the remarkable wins of team tiger. At that time team India was packed with top class batting line up of that time, led by Rahul Dravid. It was a challenge for Bangladeshi bowlers to restrict India within a chasable total. Mashrafe Mortaza leading from the front, well supported by Abdur Razzak & Mohammad Rafique, put an extraordinary effort. India managed 191 runs with Sourav Ganguly’s 66 runs off 129 balls.

After bowlers had done their job, batsmen did an unbelievable knock. Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan & Mushfiqur Rahim got half century, that led Bangladesh to the historic win against India with nine balls to spare & five wickets in hand. This victory boosted up team Bangladesh which led them to qualify for super 8 stage of ODI World Cup, 2007.

4. Bangladesh vs New Zealand, 2017, Champions Trophy

It was like thinking out of the box for the supporters to see Team Bangladesh qualifying for the knockout stages of ICC events. But Team Bangladesh changed the thought through a stunning victory against New Zealand getting into the semi-final of ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

After batting first, Black Caps secured 265 runs on the board riding on half centuries from Kane Williamson (57 runs off 59 balls) & Ross Taylor (63 runs off 82 balls). Though Bangladesh had a very poor start of 33 for 4 wickets, Shakib and Mahmudullah had other plans for the game.

Their partnership of 224 runs helped Bangladesh to get a five wickets win against New Zealand. Both Shakid &Mahmudullah got centuries. Though Shakib got out, Mahmudullah finished the game and was not out for 102 runs.

5. Bangladesh vs Pakistan, 2024, 1st Test

Bangladesh beat Pakistan for the first time in Test cricket by securing a 10 wicket win in Rawalpindi. Mushfiqur Rahim’s 191 from 341 balls ensured a first innings lead of 117 runs, in response to Pakistan’s 448 runs. Team Pakistan got all out on only 146 runs in the second innings leaving a target of only 30 runs to win, which Team Bangladesh reached within seven overs.

Pakistan’s first innings was led by Rizwan’s 171 not out & Saud Shakeel’s 141, their 240 runs partnership rescuing their team from 114-4. Bangladesh fought back strongly by Mushfiqur’s knock with support from Shadman, Mominul Haque, Mehidy & Liton Das.
