Old Dhaka is always special for its variety of food. Though Old Dhaka is mostly known for Mughal Cuisine, specially for biryani, if you want to go for completely vegetarian, Jagannath Bhojnalaya is a great place for you. Starting its journey back in 2005, Jagannath Bhojnalaya is heaven for vegetarians. The founder of this restaurant, Nitai Pal died in 2020 due to Covid19. Currently it is under the supervision of Ashok Kaviraj.

It’s located on the second floor of a building, near the Shiv temple of Tanti Bazar. The restaurant opens at 8am in the morning. You will get a huge rush during the lunch hour. Jagannath Bhojnalaya generally closes at 10 pm, but depending on the crowd it sometimes remains open till 11 pm. Everyday about 20 items are prepared to serve the customers here.

For those who think vegetarian dishes only mean shak (শাক) , vaji (ভাজি) & alu vorta (আলু ভর্তা), a big surprise waits for them when they see the trays full of small bowls of gravies and fries. Most interesting part of this restaurant is the way of serving the food. Trays lined up in the tables, having the items of the day. You can take your favorite one and you will pay the bill accordingly. You will get 8-10 types of vorta (ভর্তা), 3-4 types of dal (ডাল), 2-3 types of shak (শাক), payesh (পায়েস), chatni (চাটনি) and a huge variety of vegetable items of which pach mishali shobji (পাঁচমিশালি সবজি) is very popular. Onions and garlic are not used in cooking.

Though mostly the locals from Tanti bazar, Shakhari bazar, Islampur, used to come here to have quality food at reasonable price, in recent times people from all over Bangladesh are coming over here, experiencing the taste of vegetarian food.
